Tooth Extraction in Dubai: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Nobody looks forward to having a tooth out. If your dentist has said one needs to go, or a toothache has you worried it might, this page takes you through it: why teeth get removed, how to get ready, what you will feel in the chair, and how to heal without trouble.
At Top Smile Dental Clinic we carry out simple, surgical and wisdom tooth extractions in Dubai, at our Oud Metha and Dubai Silicon Oasis branches. We only remove a tooth when saving it is no longer the better choice, and we will tell you plainly which side of that line you are on.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Really Needed?
Removing a tooth is the last option, not the first. If a filling, crown, root canal or gum treatment can keep your tooth working, that is what we will recommend. Extraction comes in when the tooth can no longer be repaired, or when keeping it puts the teeth and bone around it at risk.
Problem
What we try first
When extraction is the better choice
Deep decay
Filling, crown or root canal
Too little healthy tooth is left to rebuild
Advanced gum disease
Deep cleaning and gum treatment
The tooth is loose because the bone holding it has gone
Cracked or broken tooth
Crown or root canal
The crack runs below the gum line or into the root
There is no room to straighten teeth without making space
Impacted wisdom tooth
Monitoring with X-rays
It is causing pain, infection or damage to the next tooth
Signs you should see a dentist soon
Toothache that wakes you at night or lasts more than two days
Swelling in the gum, cheek or jaw
A tooth that feels loose or hurts when you bite
A bad taste, or pus near a tooth
Pain and stiffness at the very back of your jaw
A swollen face with fever is a dental infection that needs attention the same day. Call us rather than waiting for it to settle.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Dubai
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Many jaws simply do not have space for them. The tooth then comes through at an angle, stops halfway, or stays trapped under the gum. Dentists call this an impacted wisdom tooth.
Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. If yours has come through fully, sits straight and you can clean it properly, we will usually leave it alone and keep an eye on it. We recommend wisdom tooth removal when:
The gum over a half-erupted tooth keeps getting swollen and infected
Food packs behind the tooth and decay starts in it or in the molar in front
The tooth is pushing into its neighbour
An X-ray shows a cyst or damage around the tooth
Removal tends to be easier in your late teens and twenties, because the roots are shorter and the bone is softer. That is one reason we suggest a check-up X-ray even when nothing hurts yet.
Your Consultation at Top Smile Dental Clinic
Every extraction starts with a proper look, not a guess. At your first visit your dentist will examine the tooth and the gum around it, then take a digital X-ray to see the roots, the bone and anything nearby, such as a nerve or the sinus. For deeply impacted wisdom teeth we may ask for a 3D scan.
You will leave that appointment knowing three things: whether the tooth can be saved, what kind of extraction you need, and what it will cost.
Tell us about your health and medicines
Some conditions and medicines change how we plan your treatment. Please tell your dentist if you:
Take blood thinners such as aspirin, warfarin or clopidogrel
Have diabetes, a heart condition or high blood pressure
Take medicine for osteoporosis
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have ever reacted badly to an anaesthetic or antibiotic
Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own. If something needs adjusting, we will agree it with you and, where needed, with your doctor.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure, Step by Step
Most extractions are over sooner than patients expect. This is what happens once you are in the chair.
Numbing. We place a numbing gel on the gum, then give local anaesthetic. Within a few minutes the tooth, gum and part of your lip or cheek go numb.
Checking. We test the area before starting. If you feel anything sharp, we add more anaesthetic and wait.
Loosening. A small instrument called an elevator gently widens the socket and loosens the tooth.
Removing. The tooth is lifted out with forceps. You will feel pressure and pushing, but not pain.
Cleaning and closing. We clean the socket, place stitches if they are needed, and ask you to bite on gauze so a blood clot can form.
Aftercare talk. You go home with written instructions and any medicine you need.
Simple extraction
A simple extraction is for a tooth that is fully visible above the gum and has a straightforward root shape. It is done under local anaesthetic and needs no cuts, and often no stitches.
Surgical extraction
A surgical extraction is for teeth that are impacted, broken at the gum line or have curved roots. The dentist makes a small opening in the gum and sometimes removes the tooth in sections, which is kinder to the bone than forcing it out whole. The gum is then closed with stitches.
Will it hurt?
You should not feel pain during a tooth extraction. Pressure, yes. Sounds, sometimes. If you are nervous about dental treatment, tell us when you book. We will take it slowly, explain each step and talk through sedation options with you.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare: The First 48 Hours
Healing depends on one thing above all: the blood clot that forms in the socket. It protects the bone and nerve underneath while new tissue grows. Nearly every aftercare rule exists to keep that clot in place.
Do
Do not
Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes
Rinse, spit or poke the socket for the first 24 hours
Rest with your head raised on an extra pillow
Drink through a straw
Hold an ice pack on your cheek, 15 minutes on and 15 off
Smoke or vape for at least 72 hours
Take pain relief before the numbness wears off
Have hot drinks, alcohol or spicy food
Eat cool, soft food on the other side
Go to the gym or lift anything heavy
Bleeding
Light oozing and pink saliva are normal for the first day. If the bleeding picks up, fold a clean piece of damp gauze, place it over the socket and bite down firmly for another 30 minutes while sitting upright.
Pain and swelling
Swelling usually peaks on day two or three, then goes down. Ice packs help during the first 24 hours. Take the pain relief we recommend at regular intervals for the first couple of days instead of waiting until it hurts.
What to eat after a tooth extraction
Good choices are yoghurt, laban, smoothies eaten with a spoon, mashed potato, scrambled eggs, soft rice, khichdi, hummus and soup that has cooled to lukewarm. Leave nuts, chips, seeds and anything crunchy for a week, because small hard pieces get stuck in the socket.

Tooth Extraction Recovery: Day by Day
Most people feel normal again within a week of a simple extraction. Surgical and wisdom tooth extractions take a little longer.
When
What is normal
What to do
Day 1
Numbness for 2 to 4 hours, light bleeding, mild ache
Rest, gauze, ice, soft cool food. No rinsing
Days 2 to 3
Swelling at its peak, jaw stiffness
Start gentle warm salt water rinses after meals. Brush as usual but avoid the socket
Days 4 to 7
Swelling and ache fading
Return to normal food bit by bit. Stitches come out or dissolve
Weeks 1 to 2
Gum closing over the socket
Normal brushing. Light exercise is fine
Months 1 to 3
Bone filling the socket
Talk to us about replacing the tooth
For the salt water rinse, stir half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water. Let it roll around your mouth and fall out into the sink. Do not swish hard.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot comes out or dissolves too early and the bone is left exposed. Its shows up as a deep, throbbing pain two to four days after the extraction, often spreading to the ear, with a bad taste or smell. It is more common in smokers and after lower wisdom tooth removal. It is treatable in one short visit, so call us instead of putting up with it.

Tooth Extraction Cost in Dubai
The cost of a tooth extraction in Dubai depends mainly on how difficult the tooth is to remove. A front tooth with a single straight root costs less than a wisdom tooth lying sideways under the gum. You will get a written quote after your examination and X-ray, before any treatment starts.
Treatment
Price at Top Smile, per tooth
Simple tooth extraction
AED 300 to 600
Surgical tooth extraction
AED 700 to 1,500
Wisdom tooth extraction
AED 800 to 2,000
What changes the price
Type of extraction. Simple extractions cost less than surgical ones.
Position of the tooth. Back teeth and impacted teeth take more time.
Imaging. A standard X-ray is enough for most teeth. Some wisdom teeth need a 3D scan.
Anaesthesia. Local anaesthetic is included. Sedation is charged separately.
Number of teeth. Removing several teeth in one visit usually costs less per tooth.
Insurance and payment plans
Tooth extractions are covered by many dental insurance plans in the UAE, often with a co-payment. We offer direct billing with MedNet, Almadallah, NextCare (Reimbursement), MetLife and Daman, so you pay only your co-payment for covered treatment. NAS, AXA, Sukoon and Cigna members can claim by reimbursement. See all accepted insurance plans. If you are paying yourself, ask our team about 0% payment plans.
Replacing a Tooth After Extraction
Wisdom teeth do not need replacing. Other teeth usually do, because the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap and the bone underneath slowly shrinks. Your options are a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture. We will go through them at your consultation so you have a plan before the tooth comes out, not after.

No. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but not pain. Some soreness afterwards is normal for two to three days and is well controlled with ordinary pain relief.
Why might I need a tooth extraction instead of a filling or root canal?
A filling or root canal only works when enough healthy tooth and bone remain to support it. If decay has destroyed most of the tooth, the root is cracked, or gum disease has left the tooth loose, removing it is the more reliable way to stop the pain and infection.
Is wisdom tooth extraction necessary if there is no pain?
Not always. A wisdom tooth that has come through fully, sits straight and can be cleaned can stay. We recommend removal when an X-ray shows the tooth is impacted, decaying or damaging the tooth in front, even if it is not hurting yet.
How long does a tooth extraction take?
A simple extraction takes about 20 to 40 minutes, including the time for the anaesthetic to work. A surgical or impacted wisdom tooth extraction usually takes 45 to 90 minutes.
How long does tooth extraction recovery take?
Most people are back to their routine in one to three days. The gum closes over in one to two weeks. The bone underneath continues to fill in for a few months, which you will not feel.
How much does a tooth extraction cost in Dubai?
It depends on whether the extraction is simple or surgical, where the tooth sits, and whether you need a 3D scan or sedation. At Top Smile Dental Clinic, simple extractions start from AED 300, surgical extractions from AED 700 and wisdom tooth extractions from AED 800. You receive a written quote before treatment.
What can I eat after a tooth extraction?
Stick to cool, soft food for the first two days: yoghurt, mashed potato, eggs, soft rice and lukewarm soup. Avoid hot drinks, spicy food, straws and anything crunchy until the socket has settled.
When can I smoke after a tooth extraction?
Wait at least 72 hours, and longer if you can. Smoking and vaping are the most common cause of dry socket, because the suction and heat disturb the blood clot.
Can I go to work or the gym after a tooth extraction?
Desk work is usually fine the next day after a simple extraction. Take two to three days off after a surgical extraction. Leave the gym, swimming and heavy lifting for three to five days.
How soon can I replace the tooth with an implant?
In some cases an implant can be placed on the same day as the extraction. More often we wait two to three months for the bone to heal. Your dentist will advise after looking at your X-ray.
How should I prepare for a tooth extraction at Top Smile Dental Clinic?
Eat a light meal beforehand if you are having local anaesthetic, take your usual medicines unless we have told you otherwise, and bring a list of everything you take. If you are having sedation, do not eat or drink for 6 to 8 hours and arrange for someone to take you home.
